Explore Waerebo the Last of Manggarai Village and Komodo National Park
This is very challenging but also very interesting journey to explore the last remaining ancient village of Manggarai. Situated at 1,200 m above sea level, Waerebo is like a living museum about Manggarai people. Feel the genuine hospitality of people who live in very remote area, learn about their way of living and support them to preserve the existing Mbaru. Your journey will be ending by exploring Komodo National Park, swimming and snorkeling in one of the best snorkeling sites at this national park.
Day 1: Denpasar-Labuan Bajo-Dintor-Warebo Morning flight from Denpasar to Labuan Bajo. This 1.5 hours flight will give you a spectacular view of Mount Agung, the holy mount in Bali, mount Rinjani in Lombok including three Gilis, Mount Tambora on Sumbawa which eruption on 10 April 1815 caused devastating famine across the country. You will enjoy clear blue water on Komodo National Park few minutes before landing at the airport in Labuan Bajo. Arrive in Labuan Bajo, your journey will be proceeded by car to Dintor for about 3 hours. Along the road you will pass villages, plantation and rice field. Lunch will be provided en-route. Arrive in Dintor around afternoon. If time allows you can explore surrounding area in Dintor. Night at simple homestay operated by local people.
Day 2: Dintor-Waerebo Simple breakfast will be served at the homestay. For about next 3-4 hours, you will trek along the small paths on the mountainous terrain through the typical Flores lowland forest and cross the streams. You will pass the local plantation such as coffee, cocoa, clove, candlenut, vanilla, and cashew nut. View in several spots is nice and good for photographing. When arrive in Waerebo, you will immediately feel the hospitality of the people here. Take your time to relax after trekking or you can explore the area around the village and learn about the way of living of this unique community. Night at traditional house. Waerebo is the last remaining traditional Manggarai village where people still live in. This village is based on Compang model which still exists in other places but in Waerebo it has very special emotional value. Here you will get experience living with the community in their Mbaru (multy-family dwellings).
Day 3: Waerebo-Todo-Labuan Bajo-Flying Fox Island Enjoy you morning at Waerebo, follow the local members of the village to the nearby farmland where you can see how they do farming. If you are here during harvesting time you can take part in the work to harvest the crops. Preparation for trekking to Denge where you car is waiting and then drive to Todo village. Local people sometime call Todo as King’s village becaue it was the center of authority of Manggarai kingdom and royals’ home. In the past, there were nine Mbaru Niang (drum houses) around the compang or ritual center which had been eroded by time. In 1992 these Mbaru Niang were reconstructed. Todo nowadays has become a place to experience the history and culture of the Manggarai. From Todo you continue driving back to Labuan Bajo. Arriva in Labuan Bajo, transfer to the harbor in and go on board a wooden boat that will bring you to sail to Flying Fox Island. Anchor the boat near the island to give opportunity for you to refresh on the fresh blue water. Flying Fox Island is a small mangrove island inhabited by flying foxes. At dusk, thousands of flying foxes leave their nest and fly to the mainland on Flores searching their food. The next day at dawn they fly back to the island. Boat anchors not far from this island. Stay for overnight on board.
Day 4: Flying Fox Island-Rinca-Komodo-Pantai Merah At 05:30 you slowly move to Rinca Island while breakfast is served accordingly. On Rinca you will do trekking along the path on the island. With luck you might see several Komodo dragons on their activities, water buffalo, Timor deer, long-tailed macaque, including orange-footed scrub fowl whose nest on the ground often used by female dragon to lay its eggs. Back to the boat and find the place for swimming and refreshing on the clear blue water. Satisfying on swimming go on board and head for Komodo Island for another hiking on the island. Besides Komodo, there is a number of birds can be seen here but Yellow-crested Cockatoo is the high light of bird on the island. Return to the boat and continue to Pantai Merah, one of the best snorkeling spots in the National Park. Take our time to enjoy under water beauty on this site. Stay for overnight on the boat
Day 5: Pantai Merah-Labuan Bajo You still have one day on the boat trip before going back to Labuan Bajo. This is flexible day for swimming, snorkeling or visiting fishing village on a small island. In the afternoon while lunch being served the boat slowl moving to Labuan Bajo. Arrive in Labuan Bajo before dark will give you opportunity to do sightseeing around town. Stay for overnight at hotel in Labuan Bajo.
Day 6: Labuan Bajo – Denpasar/Next Destination Transfer to the airport after breakfast. Fly to Denpasar for 1.5 hours. Arrive in Denpasar, journey ends or continue to the next journey
