Explore Home of Javan Rhino on Ujung Kulon

The Ujung Kulon peninsula is the western most extension of Java. The park includes the peninsula, as well as the offshore islands of Peucang and Panaitan. This beautiful peninsula, protected on three sides by the sea and on the east by the Honje Mountains, has been a natural refuge for wildlife, now rare in the rest of heavily populated Java, and is the last place in the world where the once common Javan Rhinoceros is found. The Rhino are rarely seen, but from the recent video trap in Ujung Kulon national Park between April and July 2015, three Javan rhinoceros calves recorded. The total number of surviving animals worldwide is now 60 and all reside in Ujung Kulon.

Banteng (Javan Wild Oxen) frequent the grazing grounds morning and evening accompanied by Peafowl, Leaf Monkeys, Macaques, Pigs, Squirrels and Otters. Fruit Bats and large Monitor Lizards are also common and Green Turtle nest on the west beach. 220 bird species have been recorded as resident, the most common being Hornbills, Woolly-necked Storks, Green Peafowl, Barbets, Bulbuls and Bee Eaters. Water birds are common in the Nyiur swamps and there are many sea birds and waders. One of the attractions of Peucang Island are Rusa Deer and long-tailed macaque. Day 1: Jakarta-Carita:   Drive for about 4-5 hours from hotel/airport in Jakarta to Carita. You will drive along the outskirt of Jakarta including farm land and industrial area in Cilegon. Arrive in Carita, check in at accommodation. In the afternoon you might have a short excursion to the forest area not far from your hotel. (LD)

Day 2: Carita-Sumur-Peucang:   At 07:30 drive to Sumur for about 2.5-3 hours depending on the road condition and traffic. Along the road from Carita you will pass nice scenery of forest area, rice field and countryside. Sumur is a fishing village near Ujung Kulon. Arrive in Sumur onboard speed boat that will transport you to Peucang Island. This trip will take about 2-3 hours. En-route stop is possible for swimming and sknorkeling on Nyawaan. Arrive in Peucang, put all luggage at guest house and proceed with lunch. Peucang Island is unique and delightful with clear blue water off the northwestern coast line of the National Park. It has white sandy beaches, calm, quite water with coral reef shore holds a fascinating world marine life. Later after lunch you will have opportunity to trek along the paths to Karang Copong which might take about 3 hours (return) where you will see the primary forest and wildlife. Return to the guest house for overnight. (BLD)

Day 3: Exploration day:   At 07:00 by boat to Cibom an old Dutch port and hike to Ciramea on the southern part of the park. With luck you might see green turtles which often seen on this beach after laying eggs. Hike to Tanjung Layar where an old light house situated. This is a good spot to get good view to Indian Ocean and Sunda Strait. From Tanjung Layar hike back Cibom, possible to see wildlife along the trek. By boat back to Peucang. Lunch will be served accordingly. It is possible to do swimming and snorkeling at Cipenyu. At 16:00 go to Cidaon grazing ground at the mainland to see wildlife such as birds, Banteng (Javan wild oxen), peacock, and wild boar. If weather is clear you can enjoy sunset from Cidaon jetty. Return to Peucang for overnight.

Day 4: Peucang-Cigenter-Sumur-Carita:   Early departure from Peucang at 06:60 to Handeleum, take about 60 minutes to get to the estuary of Cigenter River located at Hangeleum post. We will explore Cigenter River with paddled canoe. This river is habitat for python snakes, birds especially water birds such kingfishers, monkeys. Crocodiles are occasionally seen. Sometime we can see the footprint of Javan Rhino on the muddy ground by the river bank.Lunch will be provided accordingly. From Handeleum we continue to Sumur where our cars waiting and drive us back to Carita for overnight. (BLD)

Day 5: Carita-Jakarta:   Free program until tranfer to the airport or hotel in Jakarta. Journey ends. (BL)
